A better way to monitor biofilms

28th September 2023

WEBINAR WITH DR. WILLEM VAN WAMEL, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES, ERASMUS MC

Chronic infections are often linked to biofilm formation, which makes them highly resistant to both the immune system and antibiotic treatment. As a result, biofilms can cause secondary infections, often requiring the removal of life-saving implanted devices, and they significantly prolong hospitalization and increase healthcare costs.

But how can we reliably quantify the impact of antimicrobial treatments on biofilms?

While CFU counts measure cultivable cells and OD reflects total biomass, both fail to capture the true metabolic activity of intact biofilms, leading to poor correlation with treatment efficacy.

In this webinar, Dr. Willem van Wamel demonstrates the innovative use of the calScreener™ to monitor biofilms in real time — without disrupting them.
