Accessories & Consumables

Symcel accessories and consumables are developed specifically for high-performance isothermal microcalorimetry applications. They support sensitive, rapid, and reproducible measurements across a wide range of microbial testing, materials research, and eukaryotic applications.

The sample set-up is intrinsically flexible and supports both R&D testing and sterile QC testing applications, including complex viscous products, cell-based samples, solid materials, and food products. Samples are either added to inserts placed in sealed metal vials with screw caps or directly inoculated into sterile, sealed glass vials.

FLEXIBLE, RELIABLE AND VERSATILE BY DESIGN

The Symcel microbial and cell analysis calScreener® and calScreener+ systems are based on biocalorimetry, making them inherently flexible across a broad range of sample types. By measuring total metabolic activity directly within the sample vial, viable biological activity can be detected regardless of sample shape, opacity, or complexity.

This enables sensitive real-time analysis of complex matrices across pharmaceuticals, advanced therapies, consumer goods, chemicals, food products, and tissue- and cell-based materials — all with minimal sample handling and preparation.

CALVIAL – GLASS & TITANIUM VIALS

The calScreener system measurements are performed using calVials™, available in both disposable glass and reusable titanium options.

  • Glass calVials – The capped, single-use sterile glass calVials enable direct and easy injection of sample and media through a rubber septum, supporting sample volumes of up to 500 µL. The closed-vial workflow is designed to maintain sample integrity and reduce contamination risk. Uncapped glass vials are also available for applications where pipetting into vials is preferred.

  • Titanium calVials – Using the titanium calVial, samples are placed directly in vials closed with screw caps or in optional single-use plastic inserts. The vials support sample volumes of up to 600 µL, while the inserts support up to 400 µL and facilitate sample retrieval, cleaning, and vial maintenance. The inserts are optical grade and are also available in an activated version that facilitates cell attachment to surface.

CALPLATE – PRECISION SAMPLE LOADING

The calPlate™ is a 48-well sample plate specifically optimized for loading calVials™ into the calScreener® systems with high precision for highly sensitive biocalorimetric measurements. The 48-well format allows fast and efficient loading of up to 32 samples simultaneously, while the remaining 2×8 positions serve as calorimetric references, enhancing both sensitivity and overall performance.

Calorimetric references

To ensure accurate measurements, each sample is paired with a calorimetric reference. The reference balances out external distrubances and increases the signal-to-noise ratio. References can also be used as placeholders for unused sample positions.
