speed, simplicity, specificity, sensitivity
calScreener+™ Biocalorimeter
The calScreener+ ™ is the 2nd generation biocalorimeter from Symcel. The calScreener+™ is an advancement of the original calScreener ™, a multichannel isothermal microcalorimeter specifically designed for the measurement of metabolic heat.
We have improved the devices to include a broader temperature range of 20°C to 42°C, superior signal stability, and reduced sensitivity to external environmental factors such as room temperature fluctuations.
These features ensure even more accurate and reproducible results, making the calScreener+ ™ ideal for applications that require the highest sensitivity.
The research world is your oyster
The calScreener+™ Biocalorimeter consists of a single calScreener+™, configured for measurement at 37 °C and includes the microcalorimeter, the temperature control unit, the external thermostat, an installation kit and a UPS. The calView™ software for instrument control and data acquisition is included also.
You can measure at other temperatures between 20°C and 42°C by adding one or several temperature adapters for a specific temperature.
Samples can be loaded into either single-use glass vials or reusable titanium vials. Each vial type requires its own specific sample handling plates and setup, which should be specified upon order. Both vial types can be used with the system, provided that the appropriate configuration is selected during the setup process.
Optimised throughput and easy to use
32 samples can be measured simultaneously so that you can optimise your throughput. All samples are measured against matching references in a 48-well plate.
Samples can be loaded into either re-usable titanium vials (< 600 µL) with single-use sterile plastic inserts (< 400 µL) for easy sample retrieval, cleaning, and maintenance. You can also use single-use sterile glass vials (< 500 µL). Each vial type requires its own specific sample handling plate, references and setup.
For laboratories needing regulatory compliance, the calScreener+™ offers a calView™ software module supporting 21 CFR Part 11 compliance and IQ/OQ protocols, ensuring adherence to FDA regulations.
calPlate™ - the sample plate
The calPlate™ is a 48-well sample plate specifically optimized for loading calVials™ into the calScreener+ with high precision for highly sensitive biocalorimetric measurements. The 48-well format allows fast and efficient loading of up to 32 samples simultaneously, while the remaining 2×8 positions serve as calorimetric references, enhancing both sensitivity and overall performance.
calPlate™ for glass vials
This version of the calPlate™ is designed for loading disposable glass vials into the calScreener+, offering a seamless and optimized fit and precise and consistent biocalorimetric experiments.
calPlate™ for titanium vials
The calPlate™ for titanium vials is designed for the precise loading of titanium calVials™ into the calScreener+™ and optimal performance during high-precision calorimetric testing.
calVial™ - glass or titanium vials
calVial™ in glass
The capped, single-use sterile glass vial has a sample volume capacity of less than 500 µL. Each vial comes closed with aluminum caps with a rubber septum. The closed vials are not fully sealed, allowing for easy injection of media and samples through the septum without the risk of overpressure. Once the sample has been injected, the vial can be fully sealed using an automatic electric crimping tool.
Each package contains four heat-sterilized vials, which are packed in either a single-layered or triple-layered bags.
calVials™ in Titanium
Calorimetric experiments can be run directly in the titanium calVial™ or using the optional single-use plastic insert. The plastic inserts are optical grade and can be either non-activated or activated plastic inserts. The single-use plastic inserts facilitates sample retrieval, cleaning, and maintenance of the vials.
All inserts are delivered sterile for easy handling and can be used directly. Inserts are available in two versions:
- calVial™ Inserts (plate) – a 48-well plate with 48 inserts. For easy set-up and pipetting. The inserts can easily be transferred to the calorimeter vials after preparation
- calVial™ Inserts (pouch) – A box with 24 pouches of 16 (+2) individual inserts.
The inserts are needed only when using the titanium calVials™. They are conveniently packaged in separate pouches to minimize plastic waste and reduce overall costs. This provides enough inserts to run twelve full experiments when using the solid references. This is the recommended option if solid references are used and/or in case not all calorimeter positions are used.
Calorimetric references
The calScreener™ is a differential microcalorimeter where sample heat flow is measured against an inert reference, also referred to as a calorimetric reference. The reference increases the quality of the signal and sensitivity of the calorimeter by cancelling out any disturbances and increases the signal-to-noise ratio. The calorimeter reference should be completely inert with similar calorimetric properties as the sample. A sample vial can be filled with media or water that is prepared for each experiment or a preprepared inert reference or sample vial can be used.
Inert reference sample for use with the glass calVials™
To ensure accurate measurements, each sample is paired with a calorimetric reference. The calorimeter reference should be completely inert with similar calorimetric properties as the sample. The system includes a full set (48) of these inert reference samples that also can be used as dummies for any unused sample positions.
Solid references for use with the titanium calVials™
To mimimize the risk of leakage from and contamination in the refence vials, you can use solid references. The use of solid references will also save preparation time as the reference vials, as once prepared they can be used unlimited times as long as the sample volume is the same.
The solid references come in sets matching sample volumes of 100, 150, 200 and 400 µL. The references can be combined for other volumes, with the kit of 100, 150 and 200 µL references
calView™
The state-of-the-art calView™ 2.0 software is designed to give you complete control over your calorimetric experiments, providing built-in analysis and reporting capabilities. calView™ provides both instrument control and data acquisition, allowing you to manage your experimental setup. You can input detailed sample information and display real-time data in a variety of formats to suit your analysis needs.
This powerful software offers a comprehensive view, enabling you to monitor all test graphs simultaneously or zoom in for a close-up examination of individual test results. Once the experiment is complete, you can generate detailed reports that include data from multiple experiments, or export the results for further analysis.
In addition, calView™ can be integrated with a 21 CFR Part 11 compliant software module, providing robust support for electronic records and signatures. This module enables users to enforce access restrictions, define user roles, and ensure secure tracking of analysis and instrument events, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
